2/18/2024 0 Comments Ab soul album review![]() Still, Control System slowly reveals itself to be one of the most accomplished debut Hip-Hop records in quite some time. His feature on Art of Peer Pressure and the Ab tracks Nibiru and Youre Gone should have been officially released. Cole all had her featured on their songs 2010-2013ish. The doomed romance Ab outlays on “ The Book of Soul” is beautifully scored by some ice-cold piano chords and rolling drum loops, while the scary outline of world politics on “ Terrorist Threat” is appropriately foreboding.ĭanny Brown shows up on “Terrorist Threat” and his manic spitting steals the show, underlining that, while Ab-Soul shows strong signs of being a great rap artist, he still has a way to go to be a truly great rapper. Ab Soul, ScHoolboy Q, Mac Miller, Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar, J. Ab-Soul's latest, long-delayed album calls back to the glory days of the Black Hippy collective's impressive 2012 run, with the sprawling runtime, resonant repeated catchphrases, and. “It was all a dream/I swear, it never happened,” opens ‘Pineal Gland’, which adds to the dark, nightmarish feel of the music. Production-wise Control System is in the same vein of Lemar’s Section.80, compiling a series of jazzy samples, AM radio soul and horror movie-esque compositions, linking instrumentation with subject matter wisely. Ab-Soul says they’ll never understand Herbert Anthony, but his latest release certainly brings fans closer. ![]() Might as well hit play again. It’s wonderfully compelling to hear Ab construct his dense rhyme patterns, and he’s boosted by a near-flawless selection of beats. ![]() At over 75 minutes of playing time with some serious subject matter - from feminism to religion to drugs to modern societal woes - reflecting Ad-Soul's deep and conflicted thoughts and feelings, this is not a breezy listen. Top Dawg Entertainment president and rapper Punch catches the second verse, reflecting on the impact of his predecessors, "Standing on the shoulder of giants / A good man turned tyrant / That's the after effects of my environment." By the end of the song, Ab-Soul fails to reach a solid conclusion on the state of his morality - only bringing more questions into the fold. I’d be lying if I said I foresaw the heights to which Ab-Soul has risen, or appears to be rising, but I can say I’m not at all surprised to hear him deliver an album as powerful as Control System. After a slightly disappointing album in 2014 with These Days, TDE's Ab-Soul came back strong in 2016 with this sprawling project. Although 2018 signee Reason and 2020 recruit Ray Vaughn are both equally adept at twisting a double entendre to suit their purposes, they’re. "Never wore a rosary or went to confession / But if I could clean this mess up with a message, it'll be a blessing," Ab-Soul weighs faith against his own actions. Now, Top Dawg Entertainment must look to the future. I wasnt fond of Herbert either but it grew on me. The latter was Soul’s debut album, which he released via. Ab-Soul - Herbert ALBUM REVIEW (Theneedledrop) I think this is way more consistent than he does, and its definitely way more consistent than the last two for me as PVO is my only skip. His wordplay and flows are as sharp as ever and he often feels like he came with something to prove, like on one of the album’s best songs Goodman, featuring label head. These attributes have been prominently showcased on his outside the box projects such as Long Term Mentality and, most notably, Control System. With Herbert comes a focus on a display of technical rap skills and sticking out in a sea of other artists, bringing only the perspective a rapper like Ab-Soul could. The track's title kinda tells you everything you need to know about it: Ab-Soul ponders, "Am I a good man?" over a slowed down, then accelerated sample of Them Two's 1967 song of the same name. Ab-Soul has long held a reputation in Hip-Hop for being an abundantly mindful and highly introspective artist. "GOODMAN," a standout from his first album in six years, has all the elements of an addictive Ab-Soul track: a remix of a beloved soul sample, a philosophical premise and an energetic, did-I-even-stutter type of flow. The Los Angeles rapper has always been a wordsmith at the top of his game, but HERBERT sees him at his most vulnerable, dynamic and confident. Ab-Soul is back and he hasn't missed a single beat.
